:: Catherine's Hope for a Cure First Annual Golf Fundraiser
Where: Ocean Breeze Country Club in Boca Raton
Time: 9:30 AM
Catherine's Hope for a Cure First Annual Golf Fundraiser
Catherine's Hope for a Cure First Annual Golf Fundraiser

Charity Supported by Boca Raton Alumni Association

Take a swing at Batten Disease and join your friends at the First Annual Golf Fundraiser for Catherine's Hope for a Cure. The newly formed non-profit was founded by long-time Boca Raton resident Catherine Abbott-Horowitz. After months of suffering from an array of neurological problems, Catherine was finally diagnosed with Batten disease, which is a progressive, always fatal neurodegenerative condition for which there is no cure. Upon learning of her diagnosis, Catherine was determined to help others around the world by starting a 501(c)3 that would fund critical research being done by Massachusetts General Hospital and University College London. So far, she has already raised over $100,000 from her grassroots efforts, and she hopes this golf tournament will bring a greater awareness about a disease that is often misdiagnosed. The event is taking place on Saturday, May 5th at the Ocean Breeze Country Club in Boca Raton. Tickets are $121 and include the golf game, breakfast, lunch, a month-long membership to Ocean Breeze and more.

"We are so grateful to Catherine's Hope for a Cure," said Katherine Sims M.D., Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School. "Research funding is critical to help us develop better treatments and someday find a cure for Batten disease. Through this charity, we are able to get the seed money required to help us continue our scientific studies. Catherine endured a long, difficult journey to find the reason behind her debilitating symptoms. And while we do not have a cure yet, we hope, like her, that with fundraising efforts we will make that breakthrough soon!"

"This charity has become my mission," said Abbott-Horowitz. "I feel confident that if I dedicate myself to raising awareness and funds that one day through these wonderful doctors' dedication, there will be a cure. This golf tournament is the first public event for the charity and I am so grateful for the tremendous support I am receiving from the community, especially from my friends at the Boca Raton Alumni Association."

The Boca Alumni Association is comprised of graduates from all the high schools within the city of Boca Raton. Their goal is to enhance the educational experience of local students at all levels though community service projects, fundraising and educational awareness events.

"While the Alumni Association's main function is to provide social and financial support to former/current students who strive to achieve higher learning, we are a family of former students who will do anything to support each other in our important endeavors," said Todd Victor, the association's president. "Many of us are high school friends of Catherine's and when we heard of her illness, we could not wait to help her with this tournament."

"We created this event to be fun for golfers and wanna-be golfers alike," said event organizer Karrie Wilson-Lauro. "Our main goal is have people come out and have a great time! The ticket includes breakfast, lunch, a month-long membership to Ocean Breeze Country Club. Please visit the website for full details."

July 2nd - August 1st Summer Wine Course
This 8 class wine course will teach you all about the major wine regions of the world. Each class 2.5 hours long. Please call or stop by to signup.
Price: $995.00

Master Sommelier of The Breakers, Palm Beach, Virginia Philip has opened her first namesake Wine Shop and Academy located on the corner of Banyan and Narcissus.

At nearly 1,800 square feet, and with 450 personally selected offerings spanning regions all over the globe priced as low as $10, the shop brings Philip's extensive and encompassing experience to the heart of West Palm Beach. The shop will also offer wine education programs utilizing Philip's extensive experience. Programs will range in focus from regional knowledge to food and wine pairings, as well as how to buy wine and build a cellar. Costs for the programs will be $25 to $50 per class, depending on the subject matter. A limited number of eight-week classes will be offered for those looking to immerse themselves in Philip's full range of knowledge.

Opening the store fulfills a long-time goal for Philip. "My career in retail began as a part-time wine clerk in Aspen, eventually leading to restaurant management at the Five Diamond/Five Star Award-winning resort The Little Nell in Aspen, but I loved that first job and promised myself that one day I would own my own store," she says.

Prior to moving to Palm Beach and joining The Breakers, Philip was the buyer for a chain of wine and liquor stores in San Antonio, Texas. She bought wine and cigars for 36 stores, purchasing wines at all spectrums of price points from jug wine to blue chip Bordeaux, Cult California and top end Burgundy. Recruited by The Breakers in late 2000, Philip moved to Palm Beach. The move allowed her to finish her pursuit of the Master Sommelier Diploma as well as be closer to family.
About Virginia Philip:

Philip's keen interest in wine began at an early age, leading her to take a wine course in college and work a summer at a New York State vineyard. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1989 with a B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to her arrival at The Breakers Palm Beach, Virginia worked at many accredited resorts and restaurants throughout the country, most notably the Five Diamond/Five Star Award-winning resort, The Little Nell, in Aspen, Colorado and was the wine buyer for 36 stores in San Antonio, Texas.

Virginia Philip became the tenth woman in the world to earn the extraordinary accreditation of Master Sommelier (there are now 21). This achievement was complemented when she earned the national title of "Best Sommelier of the United States" in 2002 from the American Sommelier Association. Virginia has also been on the Board of Directors for the Court of Master Sommeliers.

In her tenure as Wine Director for The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, Philip directed the beverage department for nine restaurants and bars and 14 wine lists, including the resort's prized 1,600-selection list, which has won the Wine Spectator's Grand Award every year since its inception
in 1981.

Philip has also recently been appointed the Wine Consultant for Azamara Club Cruises and Royal Caribbean International Cruises. Working with this company allows Virginia to engage her skill set, working with a wide diversity of wines from across the globe with this icon Cruise Ship Company.

Philip has appeared on "The Today Show" and "Food Network" and has been featured in Food and Wine, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Decanter. She has also traveled extensively, broadening her knowledge of wines and spirits in Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Uruguay, Greece and Canada and throughout the wine regions of the United States.

:: Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s FRAGMENTOS & SHOSTAKOVICH SUITES
Where: Broward Center For The Performing Arts
Time: 7:00 PM
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, under the direction of Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev ends its season with the world premiere of contemporary choreographer Edgar Anido's piece "Fragmentos and the return of Vladimir Issaev's exciting neo-classical ballet Shostakovich Suites.

Arts Ballet Theatre's professional corps of 13 dancers have spent the last weeks working on a very demanding and exciting repertoire before they pack their dancing gear to fly to Poznan in Poland where they will perform at the International Dancer's Festival.

Shostakovich Suites is an exhilarating choreographic piece by Vladimir Issaev, inspired by the music of this Russian composer who was a revolutionary in contemporary composition while suffering the brutal despotism toward talented artists during Stalin's era.

Fragmentos by Cuban choreographer Edgar Anido is a work that portraits part of Anido's young memories, and the reflection of those memories on his present.

The concept of Fragmentos is like an echo. It resonates throughout the movement, reaching to recreate a moment, a conversation, or idea. Sometimes these moments are recreated in your mind like a maze of mirrors, where you are unsure of what is the beginning, middle, or end, just that the memory of the event exists within you. What you are left with is just a piece, just a fragment.

Edgar Anido is a dancer and choreographer based in New Jersey who currently works for Complexions Contemporary Ballet of New York. He was born in Santa Clara-Cuba, where he began his ballet studies at the age of nine at the E. V. A. Olga Alonzo and finished his trained at the age of eighteen at the National School of Ballet in Havana-Cuba.Then he joined to Camaguey Ballet as a soloist (1999-2002) Later he was invited to be principal dancer of the Central Theatre Ballet of Guayaquil-Ecuador (2002-2004) After this he become part of Ballet Gamonet, Miami-Florida (2005-2008) , he has work with several choreographers such as Dwight Rhoden, Jerry Opdenaker, Mark Ghoden,William Sollow, Alberto Mendez, Oswaldo Beiro, among others. He was named best male partner in the International Ballet Competition Havana-Cuba (1999) Winner of Silver Medal and a Special Mention for Interpretation at the Contemporary Dance Competition, Solo Para Duos (2001) He participated in the 2006 USA International Ballet Competition Jackson-Mississippi, and winner of the 2008 World Ballet Competition Choreographer Award in Orlando-Florida.

These pieces will be performed by the professional dancers of the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida company where principals Kaori Fukui, Jun Tanabe, Lillian Hill, Fan Shi and Kohhei Kuwana have the responsibilities of the main roles.

Only two shows will be presented. Saturday, May 5 at 7:00 pm at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale followed by a final performance on Sunday, May 6 at 5:00 pm at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.

Tickets are only $ 25.00. For information 305 948 4777 or visit www.artsballettheatre.org
